Befriending Crows: How to Join Your Neighborhood Murder

Befriending Crows

It is no secret that I adore crows. I have two tattooed on my chest! I have been working on making friends with my neighborhood crows for a while. They have also brought me a few things. Mostly small toys, like lego men - But the most recent gift was a small sharpened stick… I guess they were telling me to choose violence.

Crows are some of the most intelligent and fascinating birds around, often seen as mysterious creatures with a deep connection to the occult and the supernatural. They have a rich history in mythology and folklore, symbolizing everything from death and bad omens to transformation and wisdom. If you're interested in forming a bond with these clever birds and possibly joining your local "murder", this guide is for you.

The Intelligence and Mystique of Crows

Crows belong to the corvid family, known for their remarkable intelligence. They can solve complex problems, use tools, and even recognize human faces. Their ability to communicate and learn makes them fascinating companions for those who appreciate their dark charm. Be warned to not upset crows, however. Because they remember faces so well, they will remember the safe and unsafe humans. Crows have been known to hold grudges, and if this grudge runs deep enough they can even pass this down to their children.

Understanding Crow Behavior

Before you start your friendship journey, it’s important to understand crow behavior:

  • Social Structure: Crows live in family groups and are very social. They communicate with a variety of calls and can remember individuals who have been kind (or unkind) to them.

  • Diet: They are omnivorous and will eat a wide range of foods, from insects and small animals to fruits and grains.

  • Habitat: Crows are highly adaptable and can be found in both urban and rural areas.

How to Attract and Befriend Crows

How to make friends with Crows
  1. Start with Food

Consistency is Key: Begin by offering food consistently in a specific location. Crows love peanuts (in the shell), dried corn, and various seeds. Ensure the food is safe and healthy for them.

Gradual Approach: At first, leave the food and step back to let them approach. Over time, you can start staying closer as they eat to build trust.

  2. Create a Safe Space

Avoid Sudden Movements: Move slowly and avoid making loud noises to prevent scaring them away.

Offer Water: Provide a clean water source for drinking and bathing.

  3. Communicate Respectfully

Use Quiet, Gentle Voices: Talk to them softly when you are around.

Observe Their Signals: Pay attention to their calls and body language to understand their comfort levels.

  4. Offer Enrichment

Shiny Objects: Crows are attracted to shiny objects. Offer small, safe items like bits of aluminum foil or glass beads.

Puzzle Feeders: Create simple puzzles that require them to work for their food, stimulating their intelligence.
